With the closing of the Habersham Soup Kitchen in Clarkesville (read about it here: Habersham Soup Kitchen in Clarkesville closes its doors ) many of our readers have expressed interest in helping to fill the gap. McDonald’s of Clarkesville and Cornelia and Now Habersham’s Pass It On campaign would like to highlight two community resources where you can donate and volunteer.
Meals on Wheels has been a source providing healthy meals to senior citizens across the country since 1954. According to their website, https://www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org “Meals on Wheels has been guided by a single goal since the first known U.S. delivery by a small group of Philadelphia citizens in 1954 – to support our senior neighbors to extend their independence and health as they age. What started as a compassionate idea has grown into one of the largest and most effective social movements in America, currently helping nearly 2.4 million seniors annually in virtually every community in the country.” In Habersham County, the Meals on Wheels program is based at 217 Scoggins Drive, Demorest and their phone number is 706-776-7768. For those who would like to help get healthy meals to the seniors in our community, please call to find out how you can donate or volunteer.
The only other Soup Kitchen in Habersham County is The Lord’s Help Soup Kitchen, located at 236 Level Grove Road, Cornelia. Contact information is listed on their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TheLordsHelp/ and they may need more help than ever with the kitchen in Clarkesville closing. They state: “The goal of The Lord’s Help, Inc. is to alleviate hunger in our local area by serving meals to the less fortunate, and providing a place of fellowship for people simply needing to know someone cares.” We know at Now Habersham and McDonald’s of Clarkesville and Cornelia that our community cares and wants to help out where they can.
Don’t forget to click on the Pass It On icon in the top right corner of this page to see the needs that several people in our community have posted. We received a request from someone this week who had posted a need for help last month. She and her husband are now homeless and in need of help with low cost housing and other immediate needs. You can click on Meet A Need to submit your contact information so we can put you in touch with this family if you can help them out in any way. God Bless our community and remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:40 “I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me”.
