Dan Allen Dixon

A model of a life well lived and patriarch of Habersham County, Dan Allen Dixon, age 91, passed away in peace on February 25, 2017 at his Clarkesville residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Dixon was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville for 81 years, having given his life over to God when he was ten years old. He was the Elder Emeritus of FPCC. Mr. Dixon served his country proudly during World War Two first as a Merchant Marine then in the United States Navy. Upon his return after the war, he lived the rest of his life in the hills of Habersham where his family history runs deep. He was a member of The Sons of the Confederacy and a member of The Sons of the American Revolution. He earned a FFA American Farmer’s degree because he loved the land. He was a Master Mason and member of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge #325 F&AM. Mr. Dixon retired from North Georgia Technical College after sharing his knowledge of masonry with young minds for over 30 years. His love of the land was instilled in him early in life. He had a passion for gardening both flowers and vegetables. He loved to plant, tend, and watch his garden grow, and would give the fruits of his labor to anyone who asked, or anyone who dropped by. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an upstanding citizen of Habersham County. He touched the lives of many people, and he will be greatly missed by all who were graced by his presence.

Mr. Dixon was the son of the late Sherman Allen and Willie Mae Black Dixon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda “Abbie” Abney Dixon and son, Timothy Dixon.

Survivors include his wife Audrey Duncan Dixon of Clarkesville, son Michael Dixon of Traveler’s Rest, SC., daughter Abbie Jane Dixon Bennett and husband Dan of Monroe, Ga., daughter Mary Anne Dixon Fournier and husband Steve of Watkinsville, Ga., son Matthew Dixon and wife Lisa of Toccoa, Ga., daughter Rheanna Dixon Whitley and husband Lee of Rincon, Ga., daughter Desi Dixon Barrett of Clarkesville, Ga., and step-son Joey Duncan and wife Miriam of Cornelia, Ga. Surviving siblings include brother Jack Dixon and wife Margaret of Chattanooga, TN. and sisters, Nancy Anderson of Barnesville, Ga., and Ellen Mooneyham and husband John of Sautee-Nacoochee, Ga.. Survivors also include sixteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM from the First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville with Dr. Jasper Keith and Rev. Grady Walden officiating. Interment will follow the service in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the United States Navy, the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720, American Legion Post 84, and DAV Chapter #15. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial be made to First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville or to the Dan Dixon Scholarship Fund at North Georgia Technical College.
