This week the Pass It On campaign sponsored by McDonald’s of Clarkesville and Cornelia and Now Habersham will focus on the animals in need in our community. We have several agencies in our area who work hard to help homeless animals and they need our help to do their work. The heart of animal rescue and care in Habersham county is the Habersham Humane Society, Inc.
According to their website, “the mission of the Habersham Humane Society, Inc., is to advance and promote humane treatment and care of Habersham County’s companion animals through advocacy, education, targeted programs and support of the John B. Gesbocker Animal Shelter of Habersham County. We assist the community by offering different low cost spay/neuter options for residents who qualify. These specials and programs change on a regular basis so please contact us so we can assist you and your animals finding affordable spay/neuter services.” More information about these services can be found here: https://habershamhumane.org 
One of the programs is offered through the City of Cornelia. “City of Cornelia residents with low to moderate incomes can receive free sterilization services for their pets through the city’s’ Pet Friends Spay/Neuter program. All the pet owner has to do is complete the application, get an appointment date and time, and take their pet/s to the participating clinic. Income tax returns, payroll checks, bank statements (for direct deposits), Notice of Decision, or Statement of Benefits can be used to verify income. Those with elderly (65+) and/or disabled household members are encouraged to note this on the application for additional consideration. There is a $10 deposit per animal to reserve the appointment, which will be refunded after the appointment is kept. Information is available by calling City Hall at 706-778-8585.”
The Charles Smithgall Humane Society and Adoption Center, located at 4823 Hwy. 75N, Sautee Nacoochee, GA is another great shelter in our area that is taking care of our animal neighbors and helping them find forever homes. They are opened to the public Tuesday -Saturday from 10 am – 4 pm and Sunday from 1 – 4 pm.
