This week Now Habersham and McDonald’s of Clarkesville and Cornelia’s Pass It On campaign spotlights a local community resource.
The Cornelia Career Center, located inside the Goodwill of North Georgia store at 308 Habersham Hill Court in Cornelia, is helping job seekers in our community find work. The Career Center features on site career coaches to assist clients with everything from writing a winning resume to training for a new career. Their website features Career Connector that can be accessed from the computers at the Career Center or from home. Goodwill of North Georgia states:
“Career Connector powered by Goodwill allows you to register online and access job search resources from anywhere. Explore careerconnector.org on your own or visit your local career center for an overview of Career Connector and its many offerings. From résumé building technology to career planning tools and virtual job boards, Career Connector provides 24-hour access to the resources you need to land a new job or a better one.”
Every Wednesday the Career Center hosts a Job Fair. Job seekers can interview directly with hiring managers for top employment opportunities every Wednesday from 10 am – 12 pm. The career coaches can also connect job seekers with local resources to help with immediate needs like food and shelter while they search for work.
I know from personal experience what a great community resource the Cornelia Career Center is. Following is my story that will be featured in an upcoming newsletter published by Goodwill of North Georgia:
Goodwill Career Center Success Story for Georgann Haskins
Georgann came into the Cornelia Career Center stressed because she left her
previous employer after realizing that she was not going to get ahead by staying
there. While contemplating a job change, she registered with Goodwill on Career
Connector to look for jobs closer to home. Georgann found out through Career
Connector that the Cornelia center was having its New Year Job Fair. She came
to the center to see what jobs these potential employers had available.
Her stress mounted because she did not know if employers would even hire her
because she felt her expectations were too high, she had moved around too much,
and held too many jobs. Wayne Yang, one of the career coaches in Cornelia, was
able to encourage her to realize the value of having high expectations and
holding various jobs.
She said, “Wayne and the staff at this center are extremely helpful and
professional.” Georgann was looking for a good job closer to home. And after
applying for them via Career Connector, she had “offers for several of the
jobs…within a few days and have accepted a position at Longhorn Steakhouse in
Cornelia.”
Today, Georgann has completed thorough training at Longhorn and is working as a
server, making great money and being given the opportunity to move up within
this major restaurant chain. With the help of the Goodwill Cornelia Career
Center and Career Connector, someone who wasn’t sure she could even get another
job in the current job market found the perfect job for her!
I hope that by sharing my story, other job seekers in Habersham County will use this valuable community resource with much success!
