Region Tourney: Raiders season ends, Lady Raiders face do-or-die

For the Habersham Central boys, the curtain has closed on the 2016-17 season with a 70-47 defeat to Lanier, while the Lady Raiders take on Lanier as well Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Raiders finished the season 1-24 overall, going 0-10 in region play during what proves to be coach Don Ledbetter’s final season at Habersham. Lanier made history in the victory, as it made the state playoffs for the first time in school history in boys basketball.

The Lady Raiders also take on Lanier Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Dacula High School. Senior Lainey Gosnell will look to keep her career alive and get the girls to the state tournament with a win. Habersham went 15-10 (3-7) during the regular season, falling on the wrong end of a few crucial region games in heartbreaking finishes.

Lanier proves to be a tough out for the Lady Raiders, who split with the Lady Longhorns in two meetings this season. Neither game was easy to win. The Lady Raiders won 51-50 in mid-January, while Lanier returned the favor with a 70-60 overtime win in Mt. Airy a mere five days later.
