The Cold Weather Shelter at First Baptist Church of Cornelia is now closed but the church continues to offer assistance to those in need of a warm place to sleep. Pastor Eric Spivey says only one person stayed at the shelter Friday night. “We’ve closed the shelter, but are putting people up in a hotel for the next 2 nights,” he says.
While the snow is melting quickly, temperatures are expected to dip into the teens. If you or someone you know needs a warm place to stay, contact Habersham County non-emergency dispatch at 706-778-3911 and ask them to put you in touch with FBC’s cold weather shelter manager.
Community ministry
This is the fourth year that FBC Cornelia has provided a cold weather shelter as a service to the community. The shelter is located in the church annex and is open to the public during severe cold weather events.
If you’d like to help FBC Cornelia with this ministry, you can. Spivey says currently there are no specific needs but monetary donations are always helpful and appreciated.
Donations can be made online or by mail.
To donate online, visit www.fbccornelia.org. At the bottom of the homepage you’ll find an “Online Giving” button. When you click on that button you’ll be directed to a donation page (see below). Choose “other” and designate your gift for the Cold Weather Shelter.
If you prefer to mail in a donation, make your check payable to First Baptist Cornelia and write “Cold Weather Shelter” in the memo line. Mail to: First Baptist Church of Cornelia, PO Box 96, Cornelia, GA 30531.
Spivey says all donations will be used for food and supplies.
