Who are we really fighting against?

Have you ever gotten into a fight over something silly? Ever thought, “Why does this bother me this much?” and yet you continue to argue? Have you ever taken out your anger over something on someone else? I know I have done all of these things. Misdirected or unfounded anger can sometimes be boiled down to issues regarding fear, insecurity, or discontent. And these issues can be traced back to the father of lies himself, our enemy.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.”

These words from 2 Corinthians 10 are a charge to us keep our thoughts pure and focused on the Lord. Our minds are a target for the enemy; he desires to infiltrate our thoughts and derail us from positive thinking. As the scripture says, we have to demolish that which sets itself up against the knowledge of God.

Proclaiming scripture over our insecurities is one way of taking captive our thoughts. We must practice proclaiming truth in the areas of our lives where the enemy tries to take hold. Do you struggle with fear towards your future? God promises never to leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6, Jeremiah 29:11).

Do you struggle with a lack of confidence, doubting that you are beautiful or worthy of love? God says that you are his handiwork, created on purpose and for a purpose (Psalm 139, Ephesians 2:10, 1 Peter 3:3-4).

Do you struggle with doubts, feeling like you are not good enough? God says that you saved by his mercy, not because of our own righteousness. (Philippians 4:13, Titus 3:5)

Do you struggle with making the right decision, worrying that you will step out of God’s will for your life? God says that He will walk with us every step of the way (Proverbs 16:9).

If you are a Christian, you have the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome and breakdown the strongholds in your life. Practice speaking scripture over your fears, doubts, and insecurities. You will learn in time to take every thought captive, thus growing in obedience and learning to walk daily in the will of God.
