Robert C. (Bob) Henry

Robert C. (Bob) Henry, 90, passed away peacefully in his home in Clarkesville, January 1, 2017, after a brief illness.

Growing up in Gainesville, Georgia, Bob graduated from Gainesville High School in 1943 and briefly attended North Georgia College before joining the Navy, where he served during World War II as a radioman aboard a mine sweeper. He spent eight months at the end of the war sweeping for mines in the Inland Sea, including Hiroshima Harbor in Japan. His ship cleared mines for the hospital ships coming in to retrieve American prisoners of war. After discharge in 1946, he remained in the reserves and was recalled in September of 1950, serving another 18 months in Washington DC during the Korean conflict.

After growing up in the grocery business, Bob and his brother Glen owned and operated Henry’s Grocery for more than 47 years until closing it in 1995. During his retirement years, he ferried vehicles for several local automobile dealers.

In 2007 he and his wife Uldine moved to Clarkesville where they attended the Clarkesville Baptist Church.

Over his lifetime, Bob enjoyed flying, boating, waterskiing and fishing.

He was born May 4, 1926 to the late Jessie Cleveland Henry and Eva Moore Henry. He was also predeceased by his brother, Glen Henry. Bob is survived by his wife of 67 years Uldine Butterworth Henry, three children, Diana Yarbrough (John), Mike Henry (Sarah) and Lisa Prickett (Johnny), and a brother in law, Bill Butterworth. He had seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Pall bearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-laws.

Visitation will be held at Hillside Memorial Chapel & Gardens from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2017. Funeral services are at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 4 at the Clarkesville Baptist Church, followed by a 3:00 p.m. graveside service and burial in Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville.
