Gosnell Tops Lady Raiders Scoring Mark

Haley Gerrin’s Habersham Central scoring record lasted just four years, as senior Lainey Gosnell passed the mark in a 56-37 win at West Oak December 6.

Gerrin, a 2013 graduate of Habersham, has gone on to star at Georgia State. Gosnell has duplicated the success that Gerrin had as a dominant inside presence as a four-year starter.

Gosnell broke the all-time scoring record early in the win on a free throw.

“Lainey has been very consistent for her career,” says coach John Hood. “We are proud to see her get the record. Her great work ethic has produced a record that will surely stand for a long time.”

With 14 more regular season games remaining, there’s no doubt as she tallies more buckets, she’ll make it that much harder to match the feat for future Lady Raiders. Gosnell has a realistic, albeit difficult, shot at reaching another milestone – 2,000 career points. If Habersham makes a state playoff run past the first round, her current pace could see her reach that mark.

Gosnell isn’t one to focus too much on the numbers, however. In fact, when breaking the record she was unaware at the time of the accomplishment.

“I honestly had no idea that was the actual point to pass the record until after the game,” states Gosnell. “But I felt like it was a big accomplishment in my career and it was good to get the win. The coach came in the locker room and presented me with the game ball, and that was an honor to me.”

Gosnell and the Lady Raiders are 7-3 prior to a December 10 contest at White County, and return to action December 16 against West Oak again.
