Georgia Public Broadcasting Radio station WPPR-FM in Demorest is staying on the air. However, funding for local programming is not being continued after December 31, 2016.
Georgia Public Broadcasting, which has operated the station since 1996, will continue to provide programming for WPPR as part of its statewide network, said GPB president and CEO Teya Ryan. Listeners will notice the loss of the locally produced “Community Life” show, but all other GPB and National Public Radio programing will continue as usual at 88.3 on the FM dial, she said.
Piedmont College President James F. Mellichamp said the studio space previously used by WPPR will now be available for its growing Mass Communications radio program, housed in the same building at the Swanson Center at the Demorest campus.
As part of the 18-station GPB Radio network, WPPR serves the northeast Georgia area with public programming, including national broadcasts such as “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” plus GPB-produced shows such as “On Second Thought,” “Political Rewind,” and “Two-Way Street.”
