Piedmont’s Terry Martin to Lead Softball Team in South Africa

Piedmont College Head Softball Coach Terry Martin has been selected to coach a softball team in South Africa during the summer of 2017 as part of the Beyond Sports program.

Martin’s selection comes following the best seven-year run in program history with more than 200 wins, five NCAA National Tournament appearances, five USA South Regular Season Championships, and three Conference Tournament titles.

“This opportunity is an absolute privilege for myself as a coach and a fantastic opportunity for recognition for Piedmont College as an institution,”   “I want to thank Beyond Sports for this chance to represent these student-athletes in competition abroad.  I can’t wait to get on the field next summer with these talented athletes from across the country representing other institutions.”

The program features a two-week tour of Cape Town, South Africa with players selected from across the country to participate based on all-conference recognition, statistical leaders, and coaches’ recommendations.

Last year, tour participants competed against some of the region’s top teams while also giving back to the local community with softball clinics for youth players in the area.

Games at this year’s tour will be played at the site of the 2011 Junior World Championships in Cape Town, an event that saw the United States earn a championship.

Having climbed inside the nation’s top 50 winningest active coaches in number of wins, Piedmont Head Softball Coach Terry Martin embarks on this tour after another championship season in 2016 with PC claiming a regular season crown.

Martin knows a great deal about player development with this past season as a shining example as Piedmont swept the USA South Rookie and Rookie Pitcher of the Year awards for a second time as HANNAH HOBAN and MELISSA ECKMAN claimed the honors respectively.

Additionally, seven Lady Lions earned USA South All-Conference honors including three 1st Team selections while Hoban went on to take NFCA All-Region honors with veteran ABBY SMITH being named CoSIDA Academic All-District for a second straight season.
