It’s been worth the wait! Habersham Central, after being held out of the state playoffs since 2012, is making the most of its current trip. The Lady Raiders swept past Richmond Hill in the GHSA 6A State Tournament’s first round.
The Lady Raiders, playing on the home court, bested Richmond Hill 25-15, 25-20 and 25-23 to move on to the second round, where they will travel to Alpharetta (a number-one seed) on Tuesday, October 18.
Coach Lindsay Herrin couldn’t hold back her excitement on the historic win.
“Oh my gosh…right now I’m kinda speechless,” stated Herrin after the win. “I’m super proud of the fact that we did it in three sets. Never really got behind. Stayed up, and it was even a few times. Stayed up, played up.”
Senior leader Lainey Gosnell knows this success is a long time coming and required a full team effort.
“It feels great [to win],” says Gosnell. “We couldn’t have done it without each other.”
The Lady Raiders (25-8) will have their work cut out for them against Alpharetta, but they’re surely soaking in the first round win.
“We had great support,” says Herrin of the crowd that came out for Habersham Central. “Students, parents, random people in the community. We’re really looking forward to next week and going to the Sweet 16!”
