Truett Soccer Splits: Men Win Thriller, Women Drop Heartbreaker

The Truett McConnell men’s soccer team and Point University traded goals early before Joao Costa scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to put the Bears on top, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon. The Bears are now 4-3 overall and 1-1 in AAC play with the win.


Point found the back of the net first in the 33rd minute on an Alex Engel goal. Six minutes later, Clancy Loudermilk brought the Bears even on an unassisted goal going into the halftime break.

In the 58th minute, the Bears took their first lead of the match when Costa took a pass from Josiah Saydee and found the back of the net to put TMU up, 2-1.

Just seconds later, the Skyhawks knotted the match back up when Prince Gbeadeh took a loose ball and shot it into the back of the net. Costa hit the game-winning shot in the 84th minute off a cross from Tyrik Francis to bring the match to its final score.

TMU will get back on the pitch on Saturday against Union as part of the #BearBash on Truett McConnell’s campus. Volleyball matches will start at 11 a.m. with the soccer doubleheader against Union starting at 2 p.m. at the TMU Soccer Complex. The men’s soccer match will take place around 4:30 p.m.

The Truett McConnell women’s soccer team led after one half of play against Point University, but the Skyhawks scored late in regulation and right away in overtime on their way to a 2-1 win. The Bears fell to 3-4 and 0-2 in league play with the loss.

The Bears scored in the 18th minute when Paige Williams took a pass from Quiara Gebauer and found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead through most of the contest.

Point found an equalizer in the 77th minute on a Taylor Beasley goal that ended up sending the match into overtime. The Skyhawks won the game on a Celly Ruiz golden goal in the 93rd minute.
