Officials Urge Conservation During Level 1 Drought

(Cleveland)- Persistent dry conditions have prompted the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) to declare a Level 1 Drought Response in 53 counties, including Banks, Habersham, Hall and White Counties.

A Level 1 Drought Response declaration means local water utilities in the affected counties will be required to begin a public information campaign to help citizens better understand drought, its impact on water supplies and the need for water conservation.

White County Water Authority Director Edwin Nix said.. It’s not a serious situation right now, but everyone should be good stewards of the water supply we have, “the main thing the EPD wants us to do is to emphasize conservation, and let people know that from four o’clock in the evening until ten o’clock the next morning, that’s the time they need to be watering, said Nix.

Nearly all of the counties affected by the Level 1 Drought Response declaration are experiencing severe and extreme drought conditions.

Nix said practicing the conservation efforts helps save water, but it could also save you some money by checking around the house. He said, “ they need to look and make sure they don’t have any water leaks, spigots leaking, commodes running and stuff like that.”

Director Nix said, the dry conditions are expected to improve as we move into the fall and winter months, which usually provide some beneficial rainfall.
