An Atlanta man is in jail in Habersham facing a whole host of charges stemming from the theft of a Pepsi truck in Atlanta. According to a press release from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Gwinnett County Police issued a lookout early Saturday morning for a white pickup with a Pepsi logo on it after the driver refused to pull over for a traffic stop. Gwinnett Police say the driver then threw “what appeared to be narcotics” from the window.
Habersham County deputies later spotted the truck and attempted to pull it over. “The driver refused to stop and initiated a chase in the area of Hayes Chevrolet in Baldwin on Highway 365 northbound,” says HCSO Lt. Matthew Wurtz. He says deputies pursued the truck from Baldwin to Demorest with the pickup reaching speeds in excess of 90 mph. The Georgia State Patrol joined and took over the pursuit around Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway. The chase ended when a trooper conducted a Precision Immobilization Technique (“PIT”) on the vehicle just south of Cody Road on GA 365.
Wurtz says no one was injured and there was “minimal damage” to both vehicles.
Atlanta Police confirmed the pickup was stolen from a Pepsi truck fleet in Atlanta. The driver is identified as Jeimere Haney of Atlanta.
Haney was arrested and transported to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where he will be charged with felony fleeing and attempting to elude, DUI, theft by receiving stolen property, and driving without a license. “Haney will possibly have pending charges from the Atlanta Police Department, Dekalb County and Gwinnett County for crimes related to this incident,” adds Wurtz.
