Friday Night Preview: Rabun/Stephens Meet For First Time In Over 50 Years

Week 1 was not what we anticipated, as lightning won almost every matchup across the area, sending teams home with neither a win or a loss. Here’s to a MUCH better Week 2.Highlighting Friday’s matchups will be a matchup we haven’t seen in over half a century when Rabun hosts Stephens County.

BLITZ Game of the Week

WHEN: 7:30 pm
WHERE: Tiger, GA (Rabun County High School)
HIGHLIGHTS: Check for highlights on BLITZ website (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter) for score updates and game highlights
PREVIOUS: Week 0: Habersham/East Hall | Week 1: Lumpkin/White

When Rabun County takes on Stephens County, you might be surprised that it’s the first meeting between the two in over 50 years. Stephens owns the all-time series with a 4-2 record against the Wildcats despite Rabun winning the first-ever meetings in the early ’50s. The last time they squared off was in 1959.

Rabun County was heading toward its first win of the season last week at Mt. Pisgah, as it was up 21-14 with a couple minutes left in the first half. However, as with most of the local games, lightning struck often in the area and ended the game prematurely. It’s as if the game never happened, as per GHSA rules, a game that doesn’t make it to halftime is considered a “no-contest.”

Stephens County was fortunate to get their Week 1 game in, winning easily 61-20 over Franklin County. The play by junior QB Jackson Bell was outstanding, as he racked up 196 passing yards and 4 touchdowns, while adding another 31 yards rushing with another score. His efforts led him to being named the BLITZ Player of the Week.

Both Rabun and Stephens feature incredibly gifted junior quarterbacks, with a up to the task of stopping a high-octane offense. This one could be a shootout.

Players to watch include Rabun JR QB Bailey Fisher (Pre-season All-State QB), SR RB Cal Drummond and SR WR/P Noah Cannon (All-State Punter). Also worth looking out for is Stephens County JR QB Jackson Bell, JR WR AJ Curry, SR RBs Ken Major, Chris Craft & AJ Howard, and JR WR Kainan Green.
