FRESH & LOCAL at the Clarkesville Farmers Market, August 27

Savor the last tastes of the summer harvest and try some new and unique items like Jerusalem artichoke pickles, Thai white-seeded long beans, specialty hot peppers, and lemon grass stems. K & H Farms will also be here for its once-a-month visit with pastured meats. This farmers market may not be your typical market―but hey, that’s a good thing!

Conveniently located near downtown Clarkesville, the Clarkesville Farmers Market is a 100% chemical free outdoor market (which includes six Certified Naturally Grown farms) that’s open Saturdays, 9 a.m. until noon. It’s located next to The Old Clarkesville Mill (683 Grant Street).

This week’s vendors:

A Frayed Knot: Handmade items make the best gifts. Linda’s bringing new stand-up zippered cosmetic bags and zippered pencil cases. She’ll also have her popular boutique baby bibs (designer fabrics backed with minky or cotton chenille), reusable and water-resistant waxed canvas lunch bags (two left), chunky zipper fabric pouches, leather key fobs, and cotton webbing wristlet fobs.

Angel Mountain Sweets: Come by Saturday and get a box of our kid-friendly and mom-approved Breakfast Muffins. Or maybe grab a fresh cheddar biscuit before you head out to find your garage sale treasures. They’ll have plenty of grab ‘n go breakfast treats to choose from that will satisfy all―including both the pickiest eaters and health-conscious. Sherrie bakes with a lot of organic ingredients and a lot of love.

Aprons–Ties That Bind: Sadie Kelly is a local maker of aprons, aprons, and more aprons. She makes them for babies, children, teens, women, and even men. Some aprons are fun, others are cute, others are creative, but all are great for utilitarian use―the original purpose for aprons. In the kitchen, in the shop, in the garden, in the artist’s studio, or at a party. No two are ever exactly the same. And while you’re at the market, be sure to pick up a flyer that explains the bond created by aprons.

Deepwater Farm (CNG): Our favorite Cleveland growers, Douglas and Joanne, are expected to bring kale, collards, and chard as well as green beans, cabbage, cucumbers, and okra.

Jarhead Farm (CNG): Mr. Cliff is bringing late season tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, Asian eggplant, Philippine Sitao, Thai white seeded long beans, maybe some straggling summer squash but certainly winter Hokkaido, Rai Kaw Tuk squash, and Puerto Rico pumpkin (calabaza). Looking for a delicious gift? Try, then take home some of his tasty whole fruit jams; they come in a variety of flavors.

K and H Farms: Cavonna’s back and she’s got a special sale we think you’ll like: 2 lb. whole chickens for $15! She’ll also have pork chops, sausage, ham hocks, fatback, pork belly, Boston butt, and select chicken organs. This is the only Saturday Cavonna will be in Clarkesville until September 24, so be sure and stock up. And don’t forget to bring your coolers. Contact them this week via Facebook if you need to set up an order prior to Saturday.

Mill Gap Farm (CNG): Chuck will be bringing beans, okra, red and white potatoes, garlic, lemon grass stems, Cuban mojito mint, Genovese basil, and sage. He’s also bringing wife Amy’s Burmese Peanuts, Cardamom Morning rolls, and Euro style artisan bread. He’ll also have pure sunflower salad oil, and Jerusalem artichoke pickles.
