Toccoa Clinic will honor paralympian McKenzie Coan as she competes in the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and invites citizens of the region to join the celebration.

On Tuesday, August 23, the Clinic will launch a “memory book relay” throughout the northeast Georgia area celebrating Coan’s competition in the games, slated to begin September 7 in Rio.

Dr. David Yates of Toccoa Clinic says, “The Coans have been part of our medical family since 1990 as McKenzie’s dad, Dr. Marc Coan, practices internal medicine with us. So we’ve watched McKenzie grow up to become a fine young woman and outstanding swimmer, reaching the epitome of amateur competition by being part of the US Paralympic games.”

Coan holds American Paralympic swimming records in the backstroke, butterfly and freestyle competitions and currently attends Loyola University in Maryland.

Friends and fans are invited to help launch the memory book relay by signing the special book at Paul Anderson Park on Tugalo Street in downtown Toccoa, from 5:30-6:30 on August 23rd.

“It is fitting that we celebrate McKenzie’s being in the Paralympic Games and celebrate the 60th anniversary of Paul Anderson’s gold medal in the Olympics of 1956 in Melbourne, Australia,” says David Cronic, Toccoa Clinic’s practice administrator. What a beautiful and appropriate venue!”

The memory book, with brief handwritten messages of support and encouragement, will travel to Toccoa Clinic’s satellite clinics in Clayton, Lavonia, Clarkesville and Demorest and to other locations in the region by request. Those interested in hosting the memory book at their worksite may call Deborah Gibby at 706.282-5234.

The August 23rd event starts the memory book relay. It will conclude with a community celebration and homecoming when Coan returns from Rio in mid-September.
