The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is teaming up with the navigation app Waze to help improve mobility and road safety in Georgia.
GDOT announced this week it’s entered into a data-sharing partnership with Waze called the Connected Citizens Program. Through this program, GDOT will provide drivers with real-time construction, crash and road closure data. In exchange, GDOT will get the benefit of access to real-time, anonymous, Waze-generated incident and slow-down information directly from drivers.
The goal is to provide drivers with a free, succinct, thorough overview of current road conditions in Georgia.
“We are excited about this great data-sharing partnership with Waze that will provide a valuable supplement to the NaviGAtor 511 system,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell McMurry. “Georgia motorists will now have real-time traffic information not only on our interstates and state routes, but also on arterial routes – information that is coming directly from the traveling public.”
Waze Connected Citizens Program manager Paige Fitzgerald says GDOT’s participation will help Wazers “better circumvent major traffic events and real-time traffic blocks statewide.” She adds, “This exchange empowers our users, Georgia DOT and the broader community to work together to improve urban mobility within the state.”
