Head coach Tron Griffin and Director of Athletics Dr. Stacy Hall announced Wednesday that Chandler Merkerson was named Assistant Coach of the women’s basketball program at Truett McConnell.
Merkerson comes to Cleveland from NCAA Division II institution Lincoln Memorial University, where she had served as an assistant coach for the Railsplitters since 2014 while obtaining her Master’s degree in Business Administration. While at LMU, she helped lead the women’s basketball program to a 31-27 record over two years, including a trip to the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) tournament semifinals last year.
“We are very excited to have Coach Chan as a part of the staff,” said Griffin. “Chandler is a young up and coming talented coach in the profession. In my time of knowing Chandler she has always shown great energy and passion for young student-athletes and the game of basketball. I am very excited to have such a phenomenal Christian testimony as a part of our Women’s Basketball program and Bear Nation.”
Prior to the stint at LMU, Merkerson attended the University of North Florida, where she played from 2010-2014 for the Ospreys. During her career, she saw action in 86 games and started 47 of those contests. She graduated from UNF with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management.
“I am truly blessed and honored to be apart of the Truett McConnell family,” said Merkerson. “I am excited about the opportunity to work alongside Coach Griffin and share our faith and basketball knowledge with our student-athletes and win championships in the process. The future is bright at Truett McConnell and I’m glad to be here.”
A native of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Merkerson attended Hialeah High School, where she averaged nearly 10 points per game in her final two seasons.
Chandler’s duties will include recruiting, skill development, overseeing the team’s managers, academics and opponents scouting.
