Demorest to host another Glorious Fourth

In less than one week the United States of America turns 240 years old. In honor of her birthday, Demorest is again holding its Glorious Fourth of July Celebration.

The all day event will be held Monday, July 4th, downtown on Georgia Street and in Demorest Springs Park. Festivities will include a 5K run sponsored by the Torch of Demorest, a parade, live music in the park, a corn hole tournament, rides and inflatables for kids to enjoy and fireworks.

Prepare for detours

The parade will begin at the Express Mart on Hwy. 441/Central Avenue across from the old Demorest Elementary School and will continue north on Hwy. 441 and end at Demorest Lake Road.

Demorest Police Chief Robin Krockum says Hwy. 441 through Demorest will be closed for both the parade and fireworks.

“Traffic during the parade will be closed from approximately 10:45 a.m. until the parade is over,” he says. “Traffic during the fireworks will be closed from approximately 8:45 p.m. until the fireworks are over.”

The fireworks will be begin at 9:30 p.m. and, like last year, will be shot off in the parking lot next to the Demorest Women’s Club across from Piedmont College.

City Clerk Marlena Sosebee says, “Spectators will need to be in the downtown area in order to view the show.”  Chief Krockum adds, “The roadway in front of the fireworks will be completely shut down but pedestrian traffic will be allowed and is encouraged in order to have the best view of the fireworks.”

After the fireworks, the John King Band will continue to perform in the park until 11 p.m.
