Clarkesville Police investigate attempted armed robbery

Police are seeking information relating to an attempted armed robbery that occurred early Thursday morning outside United Community Bank on West Louise Street in Clarkesville.

According to Clarkesville Police Chief Brad Barrett, his department received a 911 call shortly after 1 a.m. of an armed robbery that had just taken place at the bank. He says upon investigation it was determined that two individuals were attempting to make an after hours business deposit when a masked gunman approached them and demanded they give him the deposit.

“The driver of the vehicle attempted to accelerate to escape the area,” Barrett says. “It is reported that the perpetrator then grabbed onto the vehicle and was dragged approximately 300 yards south of the original location before letting go near Robertson Loop Road where he then fled on foot.” The suspect did not get any money.

The Clarkesville Police Department, Demorest Police Department and the Habersham County Sheriff’s office conducted a thorough canvass of the area and checked nearby residences but were unable to locate the suspect.

Barrett adds, “It is believed by investigators that the perpetrator in this case had prior knowledge of when and where the deposit was to take place.”

The victims – a man and a woman – described the suspect as a white male with a slender build, approximately 5’7″ tall. They told police he was wearing a red bandana around his face, aviator style sunglasses and a red billed baseball cap.

Barrett asks if you have any information about this crime to please contact the Clarkesville Police Department at 706-754-5390 or 706-778-3911.
