Town Hall meeting held to discuss old county courthouse

The old Clarkesville courthouse, built in 1963, has sat empty for years.

The Habersham County Commission held a Town Hall meeting Monday night to discuss the future fate of the old county courthouse. Before the meeting commission chair Natalie Crawford said, “It’s an opportunity to share with the public what was returned to us on the architectural assessment we commissioned. We wanted to share that information and discuss some other alternatives that are on the table.”

Renovating the existing building is one possible option.

The old courthouse houses the county’s administrative offices. It became the Administration Building after the new Judicial Center opened in Clarkesville several years ago.

Long considered an eye-sore by many because of its distinctive yellow brick and gold clock tower, the old courthouse sits on a prime piece of real estate on the downtown Clarkesville Square. The question of what to do with the building is a popular topic of discussion among some county residents.

That discussion took center stage Monday during the town hall meeting. The meeting included a presentation on the architectural assessment followed by a time for Q & A.
