It may not be officially summer yet, but warm weather and fun have come to Habersham. Alto’s Spring Fling Festival brought out hundreds revelers for food, entertainment and a parade through the center of town. The event is held annually on the first Saturday in June.
Across the county in Clarkesville, the Soque River Festival returned after a two year hiatus. Participants had the opportunity to canoe the Soque River as it passes through Pitts Park. Food and fun were served up to a great crowd whose enthusiasm was only temporarily suspended when thunder was heard as the last canoeists slipped into the Soque. The event was sponsored by the Soque River Watershed Association and included live acoustic music, face painting and great fun to launch summer in Habersham.
The outdoor events which were threatened by rain also reminded Habershamians about mosquitoes and wet weather. June normally sees about five inches of rain in Habersham, and this year we have had almost 7 inches since May 1st. Heavy downpours the last four weeks have created standing pools of water in some areas in which mosquitoes breed. Local long-range weather forecasts for Habersham predicts mostly sunny weather this week, but a week of rain is predicted beginning June 16.
