Local veterans and the community are invited to participate in a September 11 flag pole dedication ceremony at the Grant Reeves VFW 7720 in Cornelia.

The ceremony, sponsored by Woodmen of the World, will begin at 10 a.m. at 174 Cornelia Crossing Shopping Center, off the US 441 bypass in Cornelia.

Cornelia Mayor John Borrow, the VFW Honor Guard, and VFW Singers are on the program. The event will mark the observance of the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terroristic attacks.

The attacks on the World Trade Towers, the Pentagon, and hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killed 2,977 people and injured over 25,000 others.

343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers lost their lives trying to save others.

9/11 remains the single deadliest terrorist attack in human history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in U.S. history.
