Holiday traffic death toll reaches 18

The Georgia Department of Public Safety says 18 people have died in holiday traffic accidents statewide since Friday. Nine of the fatalities occurred between 6 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7.

Troopers with Georgia State Patrol Post 8 in Madison worked their second fatal crash overnight while Post 46 in Monroe worked four fatal crashes. One person was killed Monday in Clarke County.

The death toll reported as of 6 p.m. on Sept. 7 is nearly double last year’s. In 2019, 10 people died in Labor Day holiday crashes in Georgia.

The 78-hour travel weekend ended at 11:59 Monday night.
