With just six days left before the November 3 general election, more than half of Habersham County’s active voters have already cast ballots.
Figures released Tuesday by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office show 14,609 of the county’s 28,262 active registered voters have voted. That’s a 52% voter turnout. This is a significant surge from past years and is part of the record early turnout that Georgia has seen so far ahead of the November elections.
Much of the surge has come from record early, in-person voting. In Habersham County so far, 10,787 voters have cast ballots at the polls. Another 3,822 have voted absentee. At least 1,600 absentee ballots have not yet been returned.
“We are setting records every hour. Adjusting to a new voting system or turning on a dime to accommodate a surge in absentee by mail voting would be enough to challenge even the most seasoned elections officials. Doing so with the added complications of COVID-19 has made this effort truly Herculean,” says Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
