A 5-month-old boy was rushed to the hospital in Atlanta after a medical emergency at Walmart in Cornelia Friday afternoon.

Around 1:12 p.m., public safety personnel from Cornelia and Habersham County responded to a call from the store about an unconscious person who was not breathing.

“Cornelia police officers got on scene prior to our arrival and brought the child to the med unit,” said Cornelia Fire Chief Billy Joe Jenkins Jr. “We immediately began care and rushed the child to the Habersham County Airport near Baldwin.”

An Air Life Georgia medical helicopter flew the infant to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Authorities did not release any other details about the incident, but family members tell Now Habersham the child, Ben Rowland, of Banks County, is in stable condition.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by today’s emergency,” Jenkins said.

Rowland’s grandmother, Terri Mauldin, asks the community to please continue to pray for her grandson and family.

“I would like to thank all the law and firefighters and EMTs for the care they showed my grandson and daughter and my son-in-law,” Terri Mauldin tells Now Habersham. “It really means a lot to us.”
