Georgia State troopers charged a driver with DUI in a 4-vehicle wreck Friday afternoon. The chain reaction wreck happened around 11:30 a.m. on GA 385/US 441 Business near Batson Hill Drive in Demorest.

According to the State Patrol’s preliminary investigation, 33-year-old Jennifer Lyne Waid was driving a Toyota Sienna van when she “stopped quickly for an unknown reason.”

The drivers of a Nissan Rogue and Kia Optima traveling behind the van were able to stop, but a Ford F-150 could not. The pickup truck struck the rear of the Optima, causing a chain-reaction wreck.

Troopers say 31-year-old Travis Monti of Clarkesville was driving the pickup. They charged him with following too closely.

Troopers identified the Optima driver as Kelly Dunlap, 22, of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. Karen Reeves Carroll, 66, of Demorest, was driving the Nissan Rogue.

Habersham County Emergency Services reportedly transported one driver to the hospital. The wreck temporarily shut down the highway.

Georgia State Patrol Post 7 Toccoa investigated the wreck. In addition to DUI drugs less safe, troopers charged Waid with possession of a controlled substance (THC oil), defective tires, and violation of the state’s hands-free law.
