(Cleveland) – White County now has a third case of positive rabies contact for 2018.
In an email statement from Sean Sullivan, Environmental Health Manager for White County, on Monday, March 19th, owners of a residence in the Frank Black Road area heard a noise in the crawlspace of their home and upon investigation of the noise, a raccoon bit the homeowner’s dog on the nose and would not let go.
The homeowners were able to separate the dog and the raccoon and put the raccoon down, however, the homeowners stated that the raccoon appeared sick and was acting odd.
The dog was taken immediately to the vet and the vet reported the incident to White County Environmental Health. The raccoon was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab-Virology Section in Decatur and White County Environmental Health was advised Thursday, March 22, 2018, that the raccoon tested positive for rabies.
Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid raccoon was located. If you live in this area and have concerns about rabid animal exposure, please contact White County Environmental Health at (706) 348-7698 during normal business hours.
Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their domesticated pets for rabies.
