23-year-old man dies Saturday while swimming at Lake Lanier

A 23-year-old man drowned while swimming at Lake Lanier Saturday, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Edgar Steven Cruz Martinez was swimming at Lanier Park in Gwinnett County when he went under and did not surface, says DNR spokesperson Mark McKinnon

Georgia DNR game wardens, Gwinnett firefighters, and Forsyth County deputies responded to the call just after 3 p.m. on August 26.

“Soon after arriving, game wardens were able to locate the deceased victim in approximately 10 feet of water with boat-mounted sonar,” says McKinnon.

Gwinnett Fire rescue swimmers recovered the body.

This is the third death at Lake Lanier in recent months and the seventh this year.

A Lawrenceville man died after drowning near Van Pugh Park in Hall County on August 21.

Three people died in separate incidents in late July and early August. And in May, the body of 57-year-old Terry Daugherty was found alongside a dock in Sunrise Cove Marina.

61-year-old Timothy Cline Thomas was found dead near the boat ramp at Bolding Mill Park northwest of Gainesville.
