The 2016 Pan American Championships took place on Lake Lanier May 19-22 in Gainesville, Georgia, and U.S. women’s canoe sprinter Maggie Hogan was the first qualifier for the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Maggie Hogan has qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in canoe sprint by placing second in the women’s single kayak (K1W) 500-meter event at the 2016 Pan American Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships and Olympic qualifier Friday morning on Lake Lanier outside Gainesville, Georgia.
Hogan, who will compete in her first Olympic Games, finished second to Canada’s Lisa Bissonnette, covering the course in 1:54.12, 47 seconds off the winning time of 1:53.65. Since Canada already had qualified for Rio in the event, the quota spot passed to the highest finishing country not yet qualified, punching Hogan’s ticket to Brazil.
A 14-time national champion, Hogan becomes the first American to qualify for Rio in sprint canoeing. The reigning world bronze medalist in K1W 1,000-meter, she has been a member of the U.S. national team since 2005. She has enjoyed international success in the two-woman kayak with Kaitlyn McElroy, earning world cup silver and bronze in both 2012 and 2013. She finished fourth in K1W 500-meter at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. She won the bronze medal in the event at the Guadalajara 2011 Pan Am Games.
Born in Philadelphia on New Year’s Day 1979, Hogan swam collegiately at University of California, Santa Barbara and works at Oklahoma City Riversport.
