The Georgia Attorney General’s Office announced that two Athens men have been indicted in a two-year-old murder case.
Ja’Quavious Smith, 22, and Shamon Elder, Jr., 22, are both charged with murder, aggravated assault, and violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act in the shooting death of Brynarius Smith.
Smith was gunned down in the early morning hours of April 16, 2022, on Cone Drive in Nellie B. Homes. The 19-year-old was shot several times, according to police.
The Office of the Attorney General says that Smith was arrested in Athens by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s Gang Unit with assistance from the Safe Streets Task Force. Elder was already being held on unrelated charges at the Clarke County Jail.
“I’m proud of everyone involved with this case and appreciate their efforts,” said ACCPD Chief of Police Jerry Saulters. “Violent crimes will not be tolerated, and we will continue working with our community to hold criminals responsible.”
