2 ejected from motorcycle, seriously injured in GA 365 crash

A Toccoa couple was seriously injured when a pickup truck sideswiped their motorcycle, causing it to overturn, the state patrol says. Todd and Amy McCollum, both 41, were ejected from the bike. The crash happened around 12:14 p.m. on June 22 on GA 365 South near Cody Road in Mt. Airy.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Nathaniel Newton of Hogansville was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck in the left southbound lane. The 43-year-old Newton told troopers he did not see the motorcycle when he pulled into the right lane to yield to an oncoming emergency vehicle. The right rear wheel of the pickup struck the motorcycle’s left side, causing Todd McCollum to lose control of the bike.

The motorcycle overturned onto its side, ejecting the driver and passenger. It then struck a guardrail before coming to a final rest on the west shoulder of the highway.

Habersham EMS transported the McCollums to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with serious injuries. Newton was not injured in the wreck. Corporal Larry Ray with Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa says charges are pending against him.
