1K participate in 34th annual Lake Burton Fun Run

The rain stopped and the skies cleared early Saturday morning just in time for the 34th annual Lake Burton Fun Run.

Organizers say 1,000 people entered this year’s race. 22-year-old Wes Pectol of Greeneville, Tennessee, was the Male Overall Winner. He finished the 2 mile USTA certified course in 9:47. 18-year-old Whitney Westbrook of Decatur, Georgia, was the Female Overall Winner. She clocked in at 13:41.

This year’s Lake Burton Fun Run Male Masters title (ages 40 and up) went to 48-year-old Stephen Armes of Triangle, Virginia. His finishing time was 12:03. 55-year-old Betsy Orr of Atlanta clinched the Female Masters title with a time of 16:36.

The Fun Run course runs southbound along the shores of Lake Burton on GA Hwy 197, starting at the pavilion in Moccasin Creek State Park and ending at LaPrade’s Marina.

Seventy-eight volunteers manned this year’s race. Proceeds from the entry fees will go to benefit three Lake Burton Volunteer Fire Departments, Rabun Search & Rescue and the Rabun Sheriff’s Canine Corp.
