15-year-old boy charged with shooting teen girl in Athens

Athens-Clarke County police on Monday arrested a 15-year-old boy and charged him with aggravated assault in the recent shooting of a teenage girl.

The girl, who is also 15, was shot in the stomach. Police described her injuries as “non-life-threatening.” She remains hospitalized in an Atlanta Children’s hospital, says ACCPD Public Information Officer Lt. Shaun Barnett.

“The motive has not yet been determined and is still under investigation,” Barnett says.

Officers discovered the wounded teenager while responding to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of Spring Valley Road in Athens on April 5.

Police did not say what led to Monday’s arrest. The suspect’s name is being withheld because he’s a juvenile.

In addition to aggravated assault, police charged him with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and first-degree cruelty to children. He’s being held in an area youth detention center.
