Athens-Clarke County police are investigating a shooting that wounded a 13-year-old boy.
On Saturday, October 22 at approximately 2 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of Essex Court for a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located the wounded boy. The initial investigation indicates that another juvenile in the residence gained access to a firearm and discharged it, striking the teen.
“The investigation is still active and ongoing but preliminary information is that [the] 13-year-old was accidentally shot by his three-year-old nephew,” says Athens-Clarke County Police Lt. Shaun Barnett.
EMS transported the injured boy to an Athens area hospital in serious condition. He was then airlifted to a children’s hospital in Atlanta. Police do not have a current update on his condition.
