Vehicle fire erupts outside Baldwin apartment complex

“I had my door open watching tv and it sounded like a hiss then a loud pop. Like a big firework.” That’s how one resident of a Baldwin apartment complex described what led to the discovery of a burning vehicle outside her door.

The fire broke out in the parking lot of Manor Place Apartments shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28. As someone called 911, one neighbor tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher but was unable to get it out before firefighters arrived.

When Baldwin firefighters got to the scene, they found a grey Ford Edge parked near the building partially engulfed in flames. The burning SUV was so close to the apartments, Baldwin requested backup from the Cornelia Fire Department as a precaution.

Neighbors tell Now Habersham the owners of the vehicle are not residents of the apartment complex but they do have family members who live there. They also expressed relief that Baldwin firefighters’ quick response prevented the fire from spreading.
After extinguishing the flames, firefighters remained on the scene to make sure the fire did not reignite. It’s not clear at this time how the fire started. Fortunately, no one was injured.
