It’s primary election day in Georgia

Polls open from 7 a.m.- 7 p.m.

Georgia voters will head to the polls today to cast ballots in several key primaries, including for governor, lieutenant governor, and secretary of state. They’ll also vote on all 180 House and 56 state Senate seats.

Habersham races

One of the most hotly contested local legislative races is in the 28th District, where incumbent Rep. Dan Gasaway is being challenged by former Banks County School superintendent Chris Erwin. The district includes Stephens and Banks counties and part of Habersham.

Habersham Counties’ two other state elected officials – 10th District Rep. Terry Rogers and 50th District State Senator John Wilkinson – are both running unopposed.

Four Republican candidates are vying for two open seats on the Habersham County Commission. D. Higgins and Dustin Mealor are running to succeed outgoing commissioner Andrea Harper in District 2. Steve Lindley and Jimmy Tench are running to fill Victor Anderson’s District 3 seat. Both Anderson and Harper chose not to run for re-election.

Two Habersham County school board incumbents face challenges in today’s Republican Primary. Incumbent Rick Williams is being challenged for his District 4 seat by Kristie Dover. John Elger is running against incumbent Pat Taylor in District 5.

Local Special Elections

Special Elections are on the ballots in Baldwin, Demorest, and Mt. Airy.

In Baldwin, voters will choose between Stephanie Almagno and Larry T. Lewallen for city council. They’re running to fill the seat previously held by county commission candidate Dustin Mealor.

Mt. Airy voters will decide who will fill the unexpired term of Linda Hughes. Hughes, who served on the Mt. Airy Town Council for ten years, passed away in January. Christopher K. Green, Patrick Ledford, Ken Moore, and Cindy Williams Tyler are running to fill the post.

And finally, in Demorest, voters will decide whether to allow liquor by the drink and Sunday liquor sales.
