MAYSVILLE, Ga. — Charges are pending against the driver of a utility terrain vehicle that overturned late Saturday in Banks County. State troopers say 31-year-old Clayton Richardson of Maysville was behind the wheel of the vehicle when it crashed. The wreck critically injured him and one of his passengers.
According to the Georgia State Patrol’s preliminary crash report, Richardson was driving south on Gowder Road, attempting to negotiate a curve. The vehicle began rotating counterclockwise, traveled off the west shoulder of the roadway, and overturned onto its right side. After overturning, the UTV struck a tree.
Banks County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the scene at 565 Gowder Road around 10:43 p.m. on Dec. 13. Crews arrived to find the vehicle overturned with two occupants trapped inside, said Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols. Firefighters extricated two people from the wreckage.
An ambulance transported Richardson and 28-year-old Garrett Wessels of Jefferson to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. A third passenger, 34-year-old Chance Bugg of Colbert, was not injured. Troopers said Bugg was riding in the rear of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The Georgia State Patrol is still investigating the crash.
