Tornado confirmed in Stephens County

The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado in Stephens County early Monday morning.

An EF1 tornado has been confirmed by the National Weather Service in Stephens County. Rotation developed over extreme southern Habersham County around 2:55 AM on Monday morning. It then pushed to the east and the circulation reached the ground as a tornado at 3:06 AM.

The tornado touched down approximately 2 miles south of Boydville and lifted approximately 3 miles NE of Eastonalee for a total path length of 8.7 miles. The tornado was approximately 1/4 mile wide at the maximum. Damage consisted primarily of trees being snapped and uprooted over a wide area and also included some structural damage to homes. Wind speeds in the tornado are estimated to have been around 110MPH making it a high-end EF1 tornado.

Power was knocked out for much of the area from straight-line winds associated with the line of severe storms, and this same tornadic cell later dropped an EF3 tornado in Seneca, SC that resulted in major damage and one fatality.
