Ben Harder, chief health analyst at U.S. News & World Report, said that Georgia is lucky to have such great care available.
“There are a lot of states that do not have a hospital that is ranked among the best in all 10 specialties,” he said. “That’s a rarity. So Georgians are fortunate to have a really great hospital located in Atlanta.”
Other Georgia children’s hospitals ranked include facilities in Augusta, Macon and Savannah.
This is the second year analysts evaluated hospitals in pediatric and adolescent behavioral and mental health, but Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta did not get recognized in that category, Harder said, noting their methodology focuses on a lot of access and the process of care in connecting pediatric patients with appropriate behavioral health care.
Nationally, there is a problem of emergency department boarding due to a lack of providers and resources.
“They’re really stuck in the emergency room because there isn’t a bed available for them or there isn’t the staffing available to give them full admission to the hospital,” Harder said.
