Superintendent explains decision to renovate Hazel Grove and Woodville Elementary Schools

Some parents questioned why Baldwin wasn't included in renovation plans

Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper.

Following yesterday’s Board of Education meeting, many local parents questioned the board’s decision-making regarding renovations to Woodville and Hazel Grove Elementary schools.

After the meeting, some parents questioned as to why the board didn’t plan to remodel the older Baldwin Elementary School. In response, Cooper stated that “Baldwin has actually received some newer renovations over the past few years, such as an additional wing and playground.”

Coopers says that out of all 14 Habersham County schools, Woodville and Hazel Grove have never been renovated.

In addition to being the only two schools in the county that haven’t been renovated, the board’s decision also was affected by the growth in student population for each school.

“Hazel Grove has a growing number of students, especially, and to accommodate the students at both schools, there needed to be a number of renovations, particularly in the cafeterias,” says Cooper.

Hazel Grove in Mt. Airy and Woodville in Turnerville are both over 50 years old.
