Residents pack Cornelia meeting with sharp questions over annexation proposal

CORNELIA, Ga. — Concerned residents packed the Cornelia City Commission hall Tuesday night with questions about a proposed zoning and annexation request from Cook Construction & Real Estate. The standing-room-only crowd signaled growing public interest, and unease, as the city continues navigating rapid growth along the Highway 365 corridor.

The Cook Construction request, listed under Old Business, was one of the most anticipated items on the agenda. While the proposal is separate from the city’s broader long-range annexation plans, residents pressed commissioners for clarity on how individual zoning decisions may influence future development along the corridor.

City leaders again emphasized that any annexation must follow state law, include multiple public hearings, and allow for public participation. In recent weeks, officials have also worked to counter online misinformation about the process and explain the city’s planning goals for the fast-growing area.

Now Habersham is covering the meeting and will have full details later tonight. Check back for updates.
