A 22-year-old man who was shot in a confrontation Sunday night outside a Baldwin residence has died. Eduardo Mora of Baldwin died after being shot by a 17-year-old he pulled a gun on, the GBI says.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Habersham County 911 Center received a call regarding a shooting on Boxwood Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Mora critically injured with a gunshot wound. Habersham EMS transported him to the trauma unit at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he died.
The teen accused of shooting Mora, Jose Luis Morales, was still on the scene when police arrived. According to GBI spokesperson Natalie Ammons, “Mora went to Morales’ home and pointed a gun at him. Morales then shot Mora.”
A neighbor told Now Habersham a car pulled into Morales’ yard and shots rang out.
The shooting happened in a mobile home park off West Airport Road about a mile north of the Habersham County Airport. Residents say they heard what they thought were fireworks going off and didn’t realize it was gunfire until police arrived.
“We’ve never seen this many police here before,” one resident told Now Habersham.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Baldwin, Alto, and Cornelia PD, and the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. Baldwin police turned the case over to the GBI to investigate.
“This is an active investigation, and charges, in this case, are anticipated,” says Ammons.
