NWS says tornado hit south Habersham County

The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down in Habersham County early Monday morning.

Preliminary survey results indicate an EF1 tornado touched down at 2:49 a.m. on April 13 approximately 2 miles west of the Raoul community. It stayed on the ground for 4.88 miles and lifted approximately 1 mile southwest of Baldwin for a total path length of 4.88 miles.

The tornado was approximately 100 yards wide at the maximum. Damage consisted primarily of large numbers of uprooted and snapped trees, and some damage to roofs and panels of manufactured homes and outbuildings.

Wind speeds in the tornado are estimated to have been around 100MPH.

Straight-line winds associated with the line of severe storms also knocked out power and caused damage farther north in Habersham County.

This same tornadic cell later dropped an EF1 tornado at 110MPH on Stephens County and an EF3 tornado in Seneca, SC that resulted in major damage and one fatality.

The outbreak of tornados that stretched across the South on Easter Sunday into Monday killed at least 33 people including seven in Georgia and nine in South Carolina.
