On a day that saw a record number of COVID related deaths in Georgia, Habersham County Tuesday reported its fiftieth death. That’s nearly half as many as neighboring Hall County which recorded eight deaths on Tuesday, raising its death toll to 99.

Statewide, the Georgia Department of Public Health Tuesday reported 3,639 new cases of COVID-19 and 137 deaths. Public health officials say the increase was partly due to catching up on numbers from over the weekend when reporting typically slows. But state Department of Public Health spokesperson Nancy Nydam also acknowledged that “given the high number of COVID-19 cases confirmed at the end of July, we are, unfortunately, seeing deaths related to those cases.’’

Georgia’s cumulative confirmed case total is now 222,588 with at least 4,351 deaths statewide.

Nationally, at least 5.1 million people have been infected with the coronavirus and over 164,000 have died, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University. Following Tuesday’s sharp increase, Georgia surpassed Louisiana and now has the eleventh highest death toll among states.

Long-term care residents currently account for 43.5% of the overall number of virus-related deaths in Georgia. Figures released Tuesday by the Georgia Department of Community Health show that at least 1,894 long-term care residents in the state have died with the virus.

In Georgia, 21,031 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since the state’s outbreak began in early March. Of those, 3,832 have been admitted to intensive care.

On Tuesday, August 11, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency reports there were 2,881 COVID-19 patients in acute care hospitals around the state.

Grady Hospital in Atlanta is the Regional Coordinating Center for patient distribution. Its website shows that half the hospitals in EMS Region 2, which covers much of Northeast Georgia, are either “Busy” or “Overcrowded.”
