It was a hot sunny spring Saturday, the kind perfect for swimming. That’s what Jack and Ben Bandy and Daniel Green were doing when they noticed that something was off.

They heard a chainsaw running, not so unusual for rural Georgia, but this one had been idling longer than it should have. They could have ignored it, many might have, but not this trio. They checked it out and are now being credited with saving a man’s life.

The victim was cutting a tree on May 30 in northern White County when the top of the tree hit him in the head. When the boys found him he was barely conscious. One of the teens ran up the hill to get phone service and dialed 911, while one stayed with the injured man, and the other ran to the end of the road to guide emergency responders to him.

First responders from White County Fire Services, the Helen Fire Department, White County EMS, and an air ambulance were dispatched to the scene on Covered Bridge Road.

“These young men’s quick action helped with the speedy response of first responders, due to the subject being alone in a rural area of the county,” said White County Fire Chief Seth Weaver.

Chief Weaver was there along with other local first responders when the White County Public Safety Department recognized the teens for their efforts. The department awarded them certificates of appreciation for what they did on that hot, late spring day.

White County High School also recognized Green on its social media page, giving him a shout-out for his actions with the hashtag #wcbemore.
