John “Clayton” Burrell

John “Clayton” Burrell left this world to go to his heavenly home in the early morning of Thursday, October 13, 2022.

Clayton was born on March 5, 1962. He grew up on Galloway Street in Cornelia, Georgia, with his parents, Clay and Ruby Burrell. He was a loving husband, daddy, and “shoppa.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Clay Burrell and Ruby Brock Burrell; grandparents, John Deveraux Brock & Grace Smith Brock and Wallace Winfred Burrell & Mae Davis Burrell; numerous aunts and uncles; and his childhood dog, Sparky.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannie Thompson Burrell; children, Stashia Burrell Cheek, Jonathan Clayton Burrell, Dylan Clay Burrell, Brittany Burrell Wiley and James Chandler Burrell; grandchildren, Jacob Brayden Cheek, Joel Thomas Cheek, Ruby Diane Hubley, Grace Arie-Noelle Cheek, and Moxon Samuel Wiley; sons-in-law, Jake Allen Cheek and Nicholas Samuel Wiley; daughter-in-law, Lucia Iriarte Burrell; in-laws, Glenda & Herman Wiley, Patricia Wiley, Elaine & Mike Henry, and June & Jimmy Mize; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

After graduating from Habersham Central High School in 1980, he went on to study architecture at Southern Technical Institute in Marietta, GA, where he became a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. He worked for many years as a project manager for H. Lloyd Hill Architects and Associates and had also worked in the shop drawing/submittals/engineering department at Habersham Metal Products Company. Clayton enjoyed many things in life, most of all spending time with his family, friends and church family. His hobbies included watching classic movies, cooking, listening to music, and participating in car shows. His favorite vacation destinations were Daytona Beach, FL, and Cherokee, NC, where he had stayed many times since his childhood.

Clayton was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, a member of the South Habersham Camp of Gideons International and a member of the Mount Airy Masonic Lodge.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, October 17, 2022, at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. Interment will follow in the Level Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 16, 2022, at the funeral home.
