GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The Ramsey Conference Center shimmered with light, laughter, and heartfelt emotion on October 16 as hundreds gathered for one of Gainesville’s most uplifting evenings — the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier’s Youth of the Year Celebration: Ignite the Future.
Nine remarkable club members took center stage, sharing their stories of perseverance, growth, and hope. Each speech offered a window into the transformative power of the Boys & Girls Clubs experience — how mentorship, education, and opportunity can truly “ignite the future.”
A shining star
This year’s top honor went to Jaemy Quito-Cruz, who earned the Youth of the Year title for the second year in a row. Jariel Hernandez placed second, and Messiah Greaman placed third. The trio delivered moving reflections on their journeys and their dreams for creating change in their communities.
Honoring community champions
The celebration also recognized those who make the Clubs’ mission possible. CEO Steve Mickens received the 2025 Ignite the Future Award for his two decades of visionary leadership. “You’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with,” Mickens said. “This is what I’m called to do, and I am proud to be a part of this organization for 21 years — and proud to serve as CEO for the past 14.”
Hogan Construction earned the Building Great Futures Award for its ongoing support, while Michele Piucci was honored with the Phillip Sartain Helping Hands Award for her outstanding volunteerism and compassion.
A night of rhythm, generosity, and joy
The Gainesville High School Drum Line and the Teen Center Boys & Girls Club electrified the room with a powerful performance that had guests clapping, dancing, and cheering along. Later, host and auctioneer Phil Bonelli kept the energy high, leading a live auction that raised thousands to fund art programs, tutoring, meals, and enrichment activities for club kids.
Raffle prizes — from beach vacations to spa days and football tickets — added extra excitement as attendees eagerly contributed to a cause that gives back directly to local children and families.
